The first week of employment shapes performance long before a worker reaches the job site. Learn how structured onboarding lifts capability, reduces turnover, and supports compliance.
In the contemporary commercial sphere, reliable and productive team players are key in strengthening an organization’s workforce. The first week of employment comes as a strategic approach that lays the foundation for long-term positive work performance. An onboarding process is usually considered a basic administrative step of form completions, team introduction, and office tours, often rushed within a day of orientation and pamphlet on company information. However, poor onboarding poses risks that can negatively impact both the employers and employees.
THE NEGATIVE IMPACT OF POOR ONBOARDING
According to the statistics provided by Enboarder in 2025, there are only 36% of HR Leaders who consider the handoff process from employee recruitment to hiring as a “seamless” transition, with almost half claiming it to be inadequate and with gaps. It is also important to note that half of the organizations (44.8%) only provide the short-sight of plans, consisting of mostly only the 30-day scheme, leaving the explanation under the discretion of managing or supervising heads, which often leaves gaps.
The poor onboarding process is the product of the lack of an optimal onboarding program, hindering progress and is often counterproductive.
Lower Productivity
The structured training deficit for newly hired employees makes them unaware of their expected tasks and their overall role, the lack of clarity delays productivity and their ability to independently complete outputs.
Higher Turnover
The absence of proper guidance during the onboarding causes difficulty in work integration. Without clarity the likelihood of early resignation of new employees increases.
Increased Load for Supervising Head
High error rates lead to supervisors taking over failed outputs. More time is consumed due to correcting mistakes and re-teaching the basics and tasks to be fulfilled.
ROOT OF INEFFECTIVE ONBOARDING
Insufficient Training
Training prepares new hires to perform their duties effectively. Supporting materials that do not highlight the standard procedures properly, combined with outdated guides produce an unreliable training system. Failure to establish support early on leads to some matters getting lost in translation and an overwhelming experience.
Unclear Workplace Expectations
When workplace roles are not effectively communicated, it leaves new employees to operate through assumptions. They may feel discouraged and lose the willingness to engage in raising concerns or seeking guidance that will lead to poor decision-making, greatly affecting the quality of work.
EFFECTIVE ONBOARDING STRATEGY
A good onboarding program entails not just showing new employees around, it engages them, encourages them to stick around, and be productive. According to TechFunnel, structured onboarding, when done correctly, delivers a strong return on investment by accelerating productivity and boosting retention.
Below are key strategies for an effective onboarding process:
- A Structured Training and Onboarding Program that includes step-by-step training, a longer work timeline, and proper documentation processes.
- An Effective Team Integration where new employees are catered so they can adjust properly, understand company culture, and feel like they belong. This guarantees better workplace engagement while building loyalty.
- New hires must understand their role expectations with clarity from the get-go. This reduces future confusion and sets their performance expectations within the team.
- Onboarding support and feedback should not end after the initial orientation, regular check-ins and mentoring are crucial to help new employees feel supported and provide motivation. The recurring support fosters commitment and positive long-term engagement.
